St Andrews is a place which contains a myriad of stereotypes; American, Scando, hipster… What we wear is an easy indicator of our crew. The question is which one do you belong to?
The Classic St Andrean
What everyone outside of the bubble thinks of St A; it is the stereotype that is never going to rub off (cheers, Kate and Wills). Favours tweed, red trousers, brightly coloured cords, lashminas, cashmere everything. Shops in Joules, Jack Wills and The White Company for household accessories. Accessories-wise, look out for the cheeky flash of the signet ring, an African belt and pearls.

The American
Coming to St A en-masse, their style can be spotted from a mile. Off-duty wardrobe consists of running leggings, swanky trainers, a Patagonia fleece, a baseball cap with a Canada Goose on top. When dressed and ready to go they are the prime culprits of sporting Barbours (always new, of course), along with skinny jeans and knee-high boots, or Hunters. For guys, Ralph Lauren shirts and deck shoes. Another set of cashmere worshippers, these guys always keep it smart.

The Hipster
From both sides of the Atlantic, there is an inexplicable number of hipsters wandering around a small town in Scotland, predominately located in Taste. More recently they can be seen breaking out the beanies and round sunglasses, most sport some form of skinny acid-wash jeans (unisex), sometimes with a denim shirt too ‘cos double denim is so on trend’, a vintage jumper/sweatshirt/shirt (the more offensive the better), Doc Martens or any other form of chunky boots, perhaps some various piercings – and don’t forget a rollie. Shops in charity and vintage shops, supplemented with a sneaky bit of Topshop.

The Scando
These guys could be the reason why everyone in St Andrews dresses up the whole time. Aside from being generically good looking, they always look effortlessly chic, and it’s up to everyone else to keep up. Simple is best with Acne black skinny jeans, ankle boots, a Fjallraven backpack (also much loved by the hipsters). Coats by Stutterheim or Canada Goose and classic Scandinavian print jumpers (see The Killing). They set the standard high.

German Postgrads
Spotted wearing a spectacular array of coloured trousers, v-neck T-shirts and simple jumpers in the library, teamed with greased back hair, these guys needed a mention just for their coordination.

Sports Kids
Unanimously associated with Wednesday night chanting down at the union, these guys go for a more relaxed look. Canterbury trackies, t-shirts, relavent Saints Sport hoodies, flip flops… always ready to get out onto the pitch. More specifically, the ski team can be spotted easily for their oversized ski jackets, high tops, beanies and generally laid back attitudes.

Pick your group and stick to it or, if you don’t really care, why not try simply going naked?
