Africa Through Your Eyes: A successful night of photography, drinks and cheese

Not something to wine about

St Andrews African Summit, ST.ART magazine and Wine and Cheese Society teamed up to host an evening of art, photography, afrobeats, and wine at The Adamson Bar.

Photographers who travelled to various parts of Africa including Rwanda, Ethiopia, and Zimbabwe with The Kula Project, The Foundation Project, and Lam & Co. presented their work around the bar in an exhibition titled Africa Through Your Eyes, sparking interesting conversations which are few and far between on typical nights out.

The bartenders stayed busy

Upon entry, guests received a glass of wine to enjoy as they looked at the various pictures displayed on the walls.

As I helped myself to endless amounts of cheese from the Continental Pantry, I joined other guests in what turned out to be a very cultural night.

Art made for interesting conversations

The biggest complaint of guests stemmed from the Wine & Cheese aspect of the evening, as they only received one glass for the £7 event ticket.

W&C frequents will know that this is unheard of at their evenings, where you can expect to imbibe a bottle or two over the course of the night. However, these bottles are usually the equivalent of £3 poison, which is delicious at the time and much less savoury the next morning.

Africa Through Your Eyes provided red or white wine from the Adamson, at around £20 a bottle, and it was much more enjoyable. Though anyone who wanted more to drink was in the best cocktail bar in town, so we all remained hydrated and happy as we discussed the photography exhibit.

A good turnout

Having spoken to a few of the photographers about their exhibits, they were all very excited to have their work on show with the opportunity to discuss their experiences with the various projects.

The collaboration brought together different groups of people, and by transforming the Adamson Bar into a mellow exhibit hall filled with groovy music, the committees created an artsy, inviting atmosphere that housed a hugely successful night.

Yum

If you missed the evening, be sure to check out ST.ART Magazine, head to a W&C night before semester ends, and keep your eye out for the SAASUM summit in February to learn more about cultures throughout Africa.

In my opinion, Africa Through Your Eyes has set the bar much higher for casual events in St Andrews.
