Everything you should do before leaving the Bubble
Have you been shat on by a seagull yet?
In this time of internship applications and classes, lists are a great way to procrastinate – I find solace in them. The sense of achievement when you’re able to scratch something off them is comparable to racking up yakarma or find a place in town that doesn’t need the sale of a kidney to fund.
Do all the St Andrews traditions
Raisin weekend (being the child then eventually the parent), May Dip in different stages (fourth year has to be in the nude, when else can you justify running into the North Sea at dawn to ‘cleanse yourself of your sins?’), being part of a soaking (the soaker and the soakee) and finally the pier jump!
Commit academic incest
Do the academic strip tease with your red gown, step on the PH stone (both during the course of the degree and after graduation) get down to the tunes of DJ Iain at the Lizard and end the night with a Dervish/Empire (will we ever be able to decide who is the ultimate drunk food provider here in KY16?).
Visit every hall
Maybe even feel nostalgia wash over you as you visit your first year hall. Visit every beach (recreate the famous Chariots of Fire on the west sands), pub (level this up by doing a mega pub crawl – after all the bubble has one of the highest densities of pubs in Scotland) etc. in St Andrews. Also try every flavour of Janetta’s ice-cream.
Pull an all-nighter
At the Butts Wynd computer room, library (at least till closing time), while looking out for the Northern Lights or while waiting to buy tickets for Christmas/ May Ball.
Take a walk on the Scores, Lade Braes, the pier
For an otherworldly experience be sure to take torches – consider going during the Gaudie, just like Hogwarts and the Fife scenic route.
Dress up like a St Andrews Girl
Although this pretty much could apply to the gents as well – complete “with Hunter Boots and Barbours on top” (feat. Ray bans when the sun decides to grace the bubble).
Do the classic Dundee related stuff
Go on a night out in Dundee (be it their union or Liquid), shopping trip to the plethora of malls there, Asian food or just a McDonalds run (Also take part in the ‘accidentally got a degree from Dundee’ yikyak scene).
Scottish stuff
Sometimes I really forget that we are in Scotland, it feels like the 51st State. Celebrate Burns night and St Andrews, eat haggis nachos at the Whey Pat, go to a ceilidh at Forgans and be able to belt out all the lyrics to 500 Miles by The Proclaimers.
Do the golf related stuff
Like learning to play golf at the golf academy, playing on all the courses of St Andrews, play on the famous old course (if your handicap is good enough that is). Take a picture on the Swilcan Bridge, meet celebrities during the Dunhill Masters (probably Hugh Grant) and for the risk loving sort, try to steal the flag on the 18th hole (not that I condone law breaking).
Visit the touristy spots in town
Take a photo with Hamish McHamish (RIP), the castle and cathedral ruins (during the daytime, but I’ve heard from reliable sources that sneaking into the ruins and passing a bottle of wine around while watching the stars is something else all together).
