Vegan perfumes are coming to the Laines
Eden Perfumes breaks the misconceptions of the dirty hippie
Veganism is a lifestyle choice surrounded by stereotypes. Lifelong vegan and environmental scientist, Jacky Moya, is breaking the misconception of the dirty hippie with her brand, Eden Perfumes, proving that we all can be ‘ethically glamorous’, at an affordable price.
With a cup of coffee and her rescue dog, Nina, by her side, Jacky told me all about her company.
What inspired you to create Eden Perfumes?
I have been a vegan all my life, and there’s always judgements surrounding the lifestyle, but being a vegan doesn’t mean you’re a hippie, or boring, or are radical. I felt that there was a gap in the market for vegan scents; we should all be able to use beauty products and feel pretty. I love perfumes, my family makes natural essential oils, and when you are an environmentalist, you have this feeling that you want to ‘cure the world’. We love animals, I have four rescue animals myself, I would have more, but I don’t have the space or the time!
What makes your scents different from big brand perfumes?
In the garden of Eden, everything was natural, free of sin, pure – that’s our aim. Our products are vegan, cruelty-free, organic, free of parabens and phthalates. Perfumes tend to have a lot of ‘glue’- additives, preservatives, fixators, that are bad for your body, animals and the environment. Animals are used in perfume production, such as extractions from the wildcat civet’s glands to produce musks. This is not needed. Our bottles are recycled, and once you’ve used it up, you can return and refill your bottle for a lesser price.
So what goes into your perfumes?
Our perfumes are now manufactured here in England, with the natural essential oils coming from my family in Spain, my home country. We produce wine and oils in a very traditional way and then blend them here in the UK. It’s really a family affair, with my parents and boyfriend working in the company, we’ve all brought something to the table. We make our musks from vegetables, including aubergine, which is quite different!
What are your most popular perfumes?
We match a lot of favourite scents; Chanel, Gucci, Hugo Boss etc., which always sell well. But each customer is different and has their own style. We have time for our customers, we will help them find the perfect scent. Our products are better for the environment and cheaper too – we don’t waste money on expensive bottles or packaging.
Your products must be very popular here in Brighton!
Yes, we love the cosmopolitan atmosphere of the city! Our business has been running for the last two and a half years and continues to grow. In the next few weeks, we are moving to our new location on Gardner Syreet, close to Infinity Foods and the North Laines.
You can find Eden Perfumes on Western Road, and shortly on Gardner street.
