Sussex beats Brighton by 85 places in The Times Good University Guide

The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide has been published today with Sussex coming in at 27th nationally.

Brighton placed 112th nationally and 18th in the South East.

The Times Good University Guide is made up of nine indicators including student satisfaction with teaching quality and their wider student experience, research quality, graduate prospects, entrance qualifications held by new students, degree results achieved, student/staff ratios, service and facilities spend, and degree completion rates.

The teaching excellence and student experience categories are determined based on the results of the National Student Survey. For teaching excellence, Sussex scored 78.8% and Brighton scored 79.2%. However, in student experience, Sussex has 79.4% student satisfaction, 3.4% higher than Brighton (76%).

Graduate prospects, based on the percentage of graduates in professional jobs or graduate level study, are 80.2% for Sussex and 68.7% for Brighton.

There is a 92.7% degree completion rate at Sussex, making it the second highest in the South East following Oxford where 98.2% of students complete their degree. The rate at Brighton is 82%.

Sussex has fallen nine places from 18th position in the 2016 guide and out of the top 20. Last year Sussex ranked in the top 20 in the Times, Guardian and Telegraph's university league tables.

Brighton held a national rank of 104 in 2016, but this year has fallen eight places and has still missed out on the top 100.
