University of Brighton employee admits to killing his boss but denies murder

He has pleaded guilty to manslaughter by diminished responsibility


David Browning, a staff member in the University of Brighton payroll department, faces trial today at Hove Crown Court over the death of his boss, Jillian Howell.

Ms Howell, who lived in Brighton, was stabbed to death in her home on Sandgate Road, Brighton, last October.

The victim was found with multiple stab wounds from a "frenzied attack". Browning allegedly handed himself in to the police shortly after the attack.

In a statement issued through Sussex Police, the family said: "Jill was a kind, gentle and loving sister, aunty and friend. We are shocked and heartbroken by her loss.

"She touched many lives in her volunteer work with the Samaritans and was always helping others.

"She loved to travel and was a passionate Albion fan and season ticket holder.

"She lived life to the fullest and was dearly loved by her friends and family."

Browning has pleaded not guilty to murder but admits manslaughter by diminished responsibility.
