University of Sussex summer graduation ceremonies postponed

It has been revealed today that summer graduation 2020 will be postponed due to the ongoing situation surrounding COVID-19.

The graduation ceremonies, set to take place in July, will now take place at a later date, amidst concerns for the safety of students, staff and the wider community. A new date for graduation has not been confirmed.

In an email to students due to graduate this year, Pro-Vice Chancellor for Education and Students Kelly Coate stated “It is with great sadness that the University has made the difficult decision to postpone our summer 2020 graduation ceremonies due to take place in July.”

“Graduation is always a highlight of the year and the fact we are unable to hold it this summer is a great disappointment to many”

“Our primary concern must be for the health, safety and wellbeing of all our students, their guests, our staff, and the wider community.”

In response to the news, third year English student, Rosie said “I’m absolutely gutted to hear about the postponing of our summer graduation, it’s been something myself and my friends and course mates have been looking forward to, and knowing we had something to celebrate together was getting us through. I was buzzing to get that Brighton summer beach pic in my grad gown and hat, but knew the decision was inevitable and is the only option given the current climate. Just glad it’s been postponed and not cancelled all together!”

The university assured students that this has no impact on the actual awarding of degrees, and that all students will still have the opportunity to celebrate, although they are currently unable to set a new date for graduation ceremonies.
