York flies high to 21st best uni in UK

That means we’re in the top 1% of the world’s institutions

York has made the list of top 140 universities in the world, coming 131st in the new Times Higher Education global rankings.

The Times Higher Education has expanded its annual university rankings globally, including 800 universities; double the number included in previous years, and spans 70 countries.

York’s exceptional research and high proportion of international students and staff has propelled us into 131st place in the table, joint with the University of Geneva.

With around 23,000 universities in the world, that makes York a member of the top 1% of the world’s institutions.

The UK took 78 of the top 800 placings, with Oxford and Cambridge both in the top 5.

Phil Baty, the editor of The Times Higher Education World University Rankings, described the UK as “a stand-out performer,” and branded its 78 institutions in the top 200 as “impressive,” but that the Higher Education budget cuts and restraints on immigration will “hinder [the UK’s] performance in the long run.”

He went on to describe the selection process as involving “rigorous standards, using tough global benchmarks.”

The Times uses indicators such as research income, teaching environment, research influence, volume and reputation, and international outlook, to rank the universities.
