There will be a candle vigil tonight in York for the victims of the Manchester attack
It is being held by York St John Students’ Union
Last night 22 people, mostly children, were killed and 59 injured in an explosion orchestrated by a suicide bomber at the end of an Ariana Grande concert at Manchester Arena. The emergency services attended the scene at 10:30pm whilst the surrounding streets and Victoria station were sealed off.
By request of a number of YSJ Students, York St John Students’ Union are holding a candle vigil tonight at 19:00 in front of the York St John Student Union to remember the lives of the 22 people who died last night in Manchester. There is also one being held at St Helen’s Square.
They aim to show that the young people of York will stand together in solidarity with the young people of Manchester this evening, they believe it is important to talk, and important to remember.
President of the University of York Students’ Union (YUSU), Millie Beach, told The Tab:
“At times of tragedy such as this one, it is so key that communities come together to show solidarity and support. The vigils being held tonight at both York St John and St Helen’s Square are representative of the fact that when something like this attack seeks to divide us, it actually unites us more strongly.”
