A man tried to break in to a YSJ student’s room

A student at York St John witnessed a man trying to break into her uni accommodation room after seeing she was inside.

The incident occurred while Nicole Busby, a first-year studying Early Childhood Studies, was laying on her bed in her Haxby Road accommodation.

After she ignored banging sounds, assuming them to be nearby building work, Nicole’s bedroom window shattered leaving broken glass in her room as a man broke it from outside.

After seeing him trying to "unscrew the locks from the inside" she panicked and made her way into a friend’s room whilst the man still tried to "lift it up."

Both students returned to the room to find the man still trying to get in through the window, "making eye contact with both" of them.

Nicole told York Press how the man "could see I was lying on my bed and my light was on" and that "everybody was concerned he might not have just been trying to steal something".

Both girls then locked themselves in Nicole's friend's room and called security, who arrived within 10 minutes to find the man gone.

Nicole’s dad also told the York Press "burglars don’t usually try to break in when lights are on and people are in the room" and that "it makes me shudder to think what could've happened."

York St John responded to the incident with reviews into campus security. Sue Waller, head of campus and residential services, said they were "shocked to hear that an attempt was made to break into an accommodation site".

Waller also said that Nicole had been offered a new room and that student services are working with her to ensure she receives the support she needs.

The university are working with the student union within the new security review.

York St John want to reassure students that events like this are very rare.

Since the attempted break in Nicole has returned back to City Residence and is considering a switch, but stresses that "I shouldn't have to move to another accommodation, I've moved here and made friends and that's a lot more stress, trying to do that somewhere else because of something like this."

North Yorkshire Police say the suspect of the attempted break in was white, wearing a coat and hoody dark in colour with both hoods up
