Micklegate re-opens following bomb scare

The street was earlier cordoned off due to a suspicious package

Micklegate has re-opened following an earlier bomb scare.

Earlier today, a suspicious item was received in Micklegate leading to police cordoning off the area.

Micklegate was closed off to both vehicles and pedestrians.

The incident has led to businesses such as The Henry VII experience and York Brewery closing for the day.

First Bus also confirmed that all services "are now subject to delays and diversions. We are yet to be informed about the time scale of this closure."

In a statement, North Yorkshire Police said: "There is currently a cordon in place in the Micklegate area of York at the request of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) after a suspicious item was received at a property on the road.

"Members of the public are advised to avoid the area while an investigation into the package is carried out.

"Updates will follow in due course."
