A Fresher’s guide to the alternative club nights of York
If remixes of Drake and Soulja Boy just aren’t your thing
Freshers' week. Back to back nights out and a guaranteed good time, double vodkas and chart bangers. There is no denying York's nightlife is underestimated, living in a historic city does not equal a snoozy night out.
Yes, a cheeky Wednesday Salvos and a classy Sunday Revs would never go a miss but, as a fresher, York's alternative club nights are definitely ones to also keep a look out for.
With the majority of events being student-run, often featuring popular artists and sets from talented student DJs, these club nights offer great musical diversity comparable to York's famously groovy neighbour Leeds. Wait, Leeds ???
So, if downing endless VKs in a sweaty Salvos is either a bit toooo much or just not enough for you party guys n gals, we've put together a short and sweet guide to the alternative club nights of York. From Drum & bass, grime, house and disco, there really is something for everyone.
On & On
Think house and disco, be prepared to get your groove on. From start to finish, the night is a spectacle. With fire breathers, dancers, themed decs, face paint and glitter; it's a huge p a r t y. On & On's first event of the academic year is almost sold out already with tickets currently on final release. Not a night to miss.
POP PARTY
Simply what it says on the tin. A night of nineties and noughties nostalgia, a guilty pleasure… a pop party!!! They've got your throwback playlist faves covered. Shakira, Usher, Britney, you name it. Although still a relatively new event, it's popularity last year means we've got our fingers crossed for more noughties nights on the horizon.
Blackbox
If new and upcoming underground sounds are right up your street then Blackbox is where it's at. Kicking off the year with their renowned 'Deep in Disco' events on Friday 18th October, Blackbox provides a more intimate party with non-stop dancing and non-stop tunes. The place to be if you're looking to groove.
What the Funk!
What the Funk! is a brand new addition to York's funk and disco scene. The event will take over Fibbers every Monday night, with some banging 70s, 80s and 90s hits. Imagine sounds of The Beatles and Whitney with a twist of funk. If you're looking for a sing-a-long and boogie to fight off those Monday blues, What the Funk! commences on 14th October.
Fuchsia
Another new addition to York's nightlife, run by ex-students of York, is Fuchsia. A drum & bass and bassline event that promises only big nights with its debut on Saturday 2nd November, presenting DnB legend Andy C (with guests) at Fibbers. To guarantee your spot in the rave, tickets are available here.
Drop.
Making its return after a year, Drop. is back with new branding and its 'most exciting season to date'. Think classic grime and garage sounds – Drop. always delivers. With previous acts including AJ Tracey (yes live and direct), Octavian, Hardy Caprio, Crazy Cousinz and Kahn & Neek. Making its return to York's underground scene this Saturday with their freshers/re-opening party, it's set to go offf.
