Cardiff University schools tell students that physical exams will not take place

Several Cardiff University schools have told their students today that examinations will not take place on-site this academic year.

In an email to students in the School of History, Archaeology and Religion the Head of School said: “We will not be conducting any examinations on site and will be developing alternate forms of assessment. The precise details of these will be settled as a matter of urgency and I will provide updates as soon as I am able to (this week).”

The Head of the School of Physics and Astronomy told students that exams will be “made available on the published date and time, and you will have to work on them for the usual period of time, then submit them as a Turnitin assignment.”

They told students that they will have access to books, notes and other resources.

For students who cannot sit an exam like this due to technical problems or requirements for special support they said they will arrange for them to “sit a normal resit exam paper in the summer resit period, which will be uncapped”.

They added that anything that looks like copying in the exams will be treated very seriously and that they reserve the right to have a “voice exam” if anyone gets marks that exceed their usual performance.

The school of Law and Politics said that exams will be “released online and are to be submitted online”. They said assessments will be set in the context “of not only industrial action that may have impacted upon your studies but also the global pandemic we are now experiencing”.

Many students in other subjects have not yet heard how their exams will be carried out.
