EXCLUSIVE: Meet the fighters of ‘Fight Night’ 2021
We hope you’ve got your best dresses and suits ready
After being cancelled TWICE last year (we’re all crying), Fight Night 2021 was finally rescheduled to 7th December 2021.
And with under a week to go until the most glamorous night on any student’s calendar, we wanted to introduce the fighters vying for the big win.
Auveen ‘The Cannon’ Shannon, 23, Medicine, Cardiff University
Why did you decide to box?
For years I’ve wanted to get into boxing – I’ve always been curious to see if I could hold my own in an actual fight – maybe it’s the Irish in me that just wants a scrap. There’s also been so many female Irish fighters doing great things in the last few years that have really inspired me.
How do you settle nerves before a fight?
I wish I knew, I’ll probably be super stressed. But probably spending a few minutes on my own and trying to focus on one round at a time.
Where will you be celebrating if you win?
After party at Revs.
What animal would you say your fighting style is most like?
A bull-head down and just go for it.
How does it feel to be a female boxer in an event previously dominated by men?
Really exciting but feeling the pressure to make sure the fight is just as good as the men’s. I feel like I have a lot to prove but I’m pretty sure we can live up to expectations.
Any words of warning for your competitor?
I might be small but don’t underestimate me. I’m strong, I’m hard and I’m ready to fight.
And finally… What’s your fave VK?
Has to be orange.

Starting at the Revs after party of course, then seeing how much my heels & lightweight status limit me.
What animal would you say your fighting style is most like?
Is there an animal that strops off if they aren’t winning?
How does it feel to be a female boxer in an event previously dominated by men?
I’m honoured to represent girls taking part in a previously male-dominated sport. I hope that, whichever way the fight goes, I’ll have encouraged more girls to take it up because no sport should be gender specific.
Any words of warning for your competitor?
Looks like a cinnamon roll, could kill you.
And finally… What’s your fave VK?
My fave VK is a gin with the anti spiking lids & a paper straw.

How do you settle nerves before a fight?
I’m not usually a person that gets nervous but if I do get nervous I’d probably just say to myself “we move” and just keep it stepping really. The fights gotta happen either way.
