Cheap London students spend just a TENNER a week on booze

Surely not?

Stingy London students are only splashing out a TENNER week on booze.

London may be the most expensive city in the UK – but according to Natwest’s student living index, students in the capital spend a modest £10.90 a week on drinks.

Even more confusingly, we’ve come 6th place in line with guzzlers at Belfast University.

And we’re not the only ones taking it easy. Students at Southampton, Reading, Brighton and Birmingham, have also been spending less than ten quid a week.

Some thrifty students even admit to cutting back on food essentials in order to splash out on predrinks – and would rather eat less so they can have heavy night out.

English student Shannon said: “I would rather buy less food in order to stay within my budget to buy booze for a nightout, I just have to be selective on certain food”

Art student Fiona said: “I would definitely like to go out more but my limit of £30 on a weekly night out, and that rarely gets me further than a bottle of wine, entry to a club and a couple of drinks, which is still very expensive compared to other unis.”

Andy Pigott, head of current accounts at TSB bank, explains how a survey of students found 61% had recently cut back on frivolous spending, and opted out of non-essential costs such as nights out, when approaching their overdraft limits.

As student fees go up, people may be beginning to feel a strain on their funds, for instance some students were found to be given less financial support this year from their parents, with 22% claiming to have received less money.
