Surgical Science Exam results LEAKED in email blunder
The emails included names, student numbers, and tutor groups
Surgical Science students were left fuming after receiving an email detailing the 2014 summer exam marks of all students except final years.
The emails included names, student numbers, and tutor groups.
The spreadsheet revealed which students had failed, been deferred, as well as any re-sit marks.
The email, which was sent to 21 people from the course, was leaked by a concerned student to the GKT gazette.
As student numbers stay the same, it will now be possible to work out from anonymous results lists in the future, the marks of fellow students.
Upon investigation, Ian McFadzean, Dean of Biomedical Sciences, said in a statement, “Having looked into the extent of what happened, it is clear that this is a regrettable and extremely serious incident. We have therefore initiated formal College procedures in line with the Data Protection Act.”
In the meantime, blundering staff have asked the 21 students who received the spreadsheet to delete it.
This didn’t stop angry students telling the GKT Gazette how they feel.
Hannah Naguib, said: “I’m just in a state of shock that something of this calibre can be leaked affecting such a large number of students now and in the future. We need a clear response as to how and why this happened.
“It leaves me asking if something like exam results aren’t well stored and protected, what else should we be worried about being leaked?”
Azza Elnaiem said it was “unbelievably upsetting – exams are stressful enough without having to worry about results being leaked, regardless of whether you’ve done well or not.
“If the university can’t keep that information under wraps, how are we supposed to trust them with our private home addresses, emails, fee statuses etc… Glad to see they’re trying to take action but if it took students to voluntarily come forward with this information, I’m not very reassured.”
