King’s are building a new £4m campus

KCL have launched a £400 million five-year redevelopment programme which involves a new campus.

The plan includes moving some facilities away from Central London, and the establishment of a million-square-foot campus at Mulberry Business Park, Canada Water in Southwark.

It will involve the development of 770 new student rooms, among other facilities, both for the University and the wider public.

KCL appear to be shifting their focus away from Waterloo

King’s have said one of the major reasons for pursuing this development is a projected 15 to 20 per cent increase in student numbers year.

King’s have also negotiated the sale of various parts of land on the Waterloo Campus.

With some of the development due to open at the start of next year, work has already begun – you can currently see the area that is already closed off for this development with the distinctive King’s signs.

King’s have recently been keen on developing and expanding the university campus, as this follows on from the recent purchase of Bush House/the Aldwych Quarter located opposite the Strand campus.

That particular development is on a 50 year lease, and will be open in time for the 2016/17 academic year.

As always, LSE are trying to keep up with such developments, and are also expanding their own campus just up the road in Lincoln’s Inn fields, with their particular land grab bringing their spending to a cool £112.5 million.

Any students concerned that Canada Water isn’t the most central location needn’t worry – it’s still only Zone 2 , two tube stops from the Guy’s Campus and four stops from the Waterloo Campus.
