Get yourself clean: Money splashed on sprucing up Granby Street

YMCA and Y theatre at centre of £64,000 renovation project

We were told ‘it’s fun to stay at the Y-M-C-A‘ by the Village People, but now it might be fun to look at it as well.

Granby Street, which links the train station to the city centre, is to benefit from the council’s renovation initiative.

Seven of the shop fronts housed in the Grade II listed YMCA building, that houses the Y Theatre, are to be spruced up to the tune of £64,000.

The renovations come as part of Leicester City Council’s £680,000 shop front grant scheme which has also helped a number of other routes into the city centre.

Work on this particular project has been funded jointly by the Y Theatre and the City Council, each putting £32,000 towards the cost.

The Y’s chief executive Paul Brown, said: “Work started this week on improving our shop fronts and we are really proud to be part of creating a much nicer approach to the city from the railway station.”

The work being carried out on the building should be completed by June, ready for summer.

We’ll have to listen to the wise words of the Village People and ‘take a walk up that street’ once the work is finished.
