Benedict has been identified by the university as a third cousin, 16 times removed, of Kind Richard.
He will also be playing the role of the monarch in the BBC2 television series “The Hollow Crown: The Wars of the Roses”.
The poem that Benedict will be reading is “Richard” by the Poet Laureate, Carol Ann Duffy. The 14 line poem reflects on the legacy of Richard III and the impact of the recent discovery of his remains.
The cathedral has said that Cumberbatch is “looking forward” to taking part in the service and has a “passion to know more” about the king due to his upcoming role.
Revd David Monteith, Dean of Leicester told kingrichardinleicester.com:
“King Richard III’s story has been very significant in our cultural and artistic life for centuries. Now the cream of writers and performers from our day help us to see our history and indeed ourselves in a new light with flair and imagination.”
Thousands queued today and yesterday to see the coffin containing Richard III’s remains before the reinterment on Thursday.
Queue times today were up to three hours long.
The service takes place in Leicester Cathedral on Thursday 26th March from 11.30am and will be broadcast live on Channel 4.
