NUSU Elections: Meet the Editor of The Courier candidates
It’s the most popular position this year
It’s that time of year again. Expect to be littered with leaflets as you walk past the Students’ Union.
But we’ve made it easier than ever to make an informed decision about who you should vote for. Here’s all the information you need to know about the candidates running for future Editor of the Courier.
Ellie McLaren
Studies: English Literature, Language and Linguistics
Her Experience:
- Currently Culture Editor for The Courier.
- Previously TV Editor for The Courier.
- Also written for local magazine The Crack.
Ellie’s Manifesto in 5 Points:
- Have a dedicated online editorial team and introduce role of an overseeing online editor.
- Have Facebook and Twitter pages for each section which post daily content.
- Improve the social side of The Courier.
- Campaign for SU Promotion of NSR (Newcastle Student Radio) and TCTV (The Courier TV).
- Celebrate Newcastle! Focus on the culture within the city and the achievement of NCL Students.
Jade Holroyd
Studies: History, Classics and Archaeology
Her Experience:
- Currently the Arts Editor for the Courier.
- Regular contributes to a variety of The Courier’s section s including arts, lifestyle, beauty, TV, fashion and comment.
Jade’s manifesto in 5 points:
- Make The Courier a presence that celebrates the diversity of Newcastle’s students and increase inclusiveness.
- Ensure The Courier content is of interest to the student readership.
- Include more society based content through The Courier, NSR and TCTV.
- Improve The Courier’s presence on social media.
- Introduce workshops for writers.
Jamie Shepherd
Studies: Arts and Culture
His experience:
- Music Editor for The Courier.
- Presents Bigg Market Banter for TCTV.
- Formally MACSoc President.
- Won Best Critic at the Student Media Awards.
His manifesto in 5 points:
- Greater focus on campaigns and student well being such as the stigma surrounding mental health.
- Introduce a food and drink and a nightlife section to The Courier.
- Host workshops for writers.
- Pave the way for a Courier app.
- Use The Courier, TCTV and NSR to increase media coverage on events such as Freshers’ week and Stan Calvert.
Mark Sleightholm
Studies: History,Classics and Archaeology

- Currently Deputy Editor for The Courier.
- Previously News Editor for The Courier.
- Been involved with TCTV and NSR.
- Writes The Courier crossword.

- Greater social media presence for The Courier.
- Online video content and live sports coverage.
- Better promotion of TCTV and NSR on The Courier website.

Dan Robertson

- Redesign The Courier layout
- Involve societies, clubs and individual students as writers.
- Guarantee a wider coverage of student sports and student well being.
- Establish an illustrative team to supplement the pages of the Courier.
