What to do in Newcastle after exams

If you do nothing else, at least go to the pub.

At a time in the not too distant future, exams will finally be over.

When that moment comes, you should do all of these things.  Until then, you can only dream…

Future Funk Summer Carnival: 7th June

Following on from the success of their sold-out first birthday party earlier this term, Future Funk return to Digital with a two-part day and night carnival that promises to be their biggest event yet.  Tickets for the evening party have already sold out so keep an eye on their Facebook page to grab a ticket for the daytime.

Go to the pub

Immediately. The Five Swans, The Hancock and The Brandling are all suitably close to uni.  Or if the weather’s nice and you fancy something a little more scenic, try one of Ouseburn’s legendary drinking institutions for unbeatable views of the Tyne.

Bounce on the Boat: 8th June

After last year’s event sold out so quickly they had to put on a second one, Bounce are back. Promising an exclusive boat party cruising the River Tyne, tickets are only £10 but they’re limited to 250 so snap yours up quickly here if you’re interested.  Just hope that it isn’t raining.

Have a BBQ

If we’re lucky we might get a couple of days of sun after exams.  Everyone knows the best way to celebrate the end of exams and the arrival of summer is obviously to get pissed and attempt to cook some disturbingly cheap meat on a flimsy looking disposable barbeque in a public place where you’re not really sure whether you’re allowed to or not.

Newcastle has plenty of beautiful parks perfect for this timeless post-exams activity.  Leazes Park, Exhibition Park and Jesmond Dene are all within walking distance of the city centre.  Or if you’re really lazy, just sit on a patch of ground outside your house; it won’t be as scenic but it’s basically the same experience with a lot less hassle.

Swingers ‘Flower Power’ Sexually Transmitted Disco: 8th June

For one night only Swingers moves to Digi for an end of exams special.  With support from Horse Meat Disco, OuT, Mista, Paradise Disco Durham and Jonny X, this looks set to be a huge night.  Tickets are already on the final release so get them while you can.

Go out as many nights in a row as you can physically manage

After a month of half-empty clubs and half-hearted nights out (or none if you’ve been working particularly hard), town will be busy again! The queues will be enormous and you’ll probably have to wait ten minutes to get to the bar but it will be worth it.  You need to consume as many trebs as possible before you return to your boring home town for the summer where the barman will probably call your mum if you try to order a treb because he’s known you since ‘before you were born’ (is that even really possible?) and there’s no such thing as a treble unless you’re an alcoholic.

Newcastle Summer Solstice Terrace Party: 18th June

This one is quite a while after exams finish but if you’re staying in Newcastle for a little while then this looks like an event to attend.  2.3k people have already clicked ‘interested’ on Facebook despite very few details currently released so watch this space for more info.

Go to the beach

Newcastle is one of the few university cities in the UK lucky enough to have several amazing beaches only a fifteen minute metro journey away.  Come rain or shine, a trip to the beach is still a fun activity.  If you’re feeling particularly hedonistic in the wake of a triumphant exam season you could even go for a celebratory swim…

WHQ Gold Teeth Summer Carnival: 7th June

This event promises to see WHQ transformed into ‘a tropical den of debauchery’, including palm trees and beach balls.  If that isn’t enough to tempt you, early bird tickets are only £3.

Do nothing

An essential rite of passage after a month or so of hard work, you must spend at least one day doing absolutely nothing.  Don’t even leave the house.  Possibly don’t even leave your room.  Just stay in bed and binge watch all the TV you missed out on while you were slaving away in the Robbo.
