On the run Sunderland Uni student arrested in connection with murder of grandmother

A Sunderland University student who has evaded police for the past two weeks has been arrested in London in connection with the murder of a grandmother.

Alexander Carr, 33, who has links to Jesmond and Newcastle city centre, was taken into custody following his arrest on Wednesday night. 

Carr was wanted for the murder of Michelle Hanson, 47, who was found with stab wounds to her neck at a home in Brady Street, Sunderland on December 3rd.

A manhunt was launched for Carr following the discovery of the body and was thought to have been actively evading arrest.

Students at the University of Sunderland were urged to stay vigilant and keep away from Carr if they saw him and had received an email earlier in the month warning them that classmate Carr has been identified as a “key individual” in the murder case.

Detective Chief Inspector Graeme Barr, Senior Investigating Officer on the case said: “First and foremost, our thoughts continue to be with Michelle’s family at this devastating time and our specially-trained officers will continue to support them in any way we can.

“Her family deserve answers and we are committed to finding out what has happened and bringing anyone involved to justice.”

Tributes have been made to Michelle by friends and family, including from her daughter, Shannon Brown who described her as “caring, kind and loving person”.
