Classy, sophisticated and sharp: We went to Newcastle Uni’s Fashion Soc show

Newcastle Uni’s Fashion Society hosted its annual show back in June, taking us on a journey through trends of the past with this year’s theme, Fashion Through the Ages. Following the success of last year’s event, the show again took place in the Discovery Museum’s striking Great Hall. 

As much as I try, I’ll admit at my core that I am far from a “fashionista”, and so I needed to enlist some extra help. My housemate – my right-hand woman and the most fashionable girlie I know – was the only person fit for the job and capable of providing a comprehensive review. She was ecstatic to be dragged along for the ride.

When we arrived at the venue, we were warmly greeted and equipped promptly with programmes and welcome glasses of white wine. The hall was decked out for the occasion with balloons, flowers and goodie bags for VIP ticket holders. We chose to sit at the end of the runway for optimal viewing of the models’ poses. 

The first half of the show debuted pieces designed and made by members of the society, with the second half showcasing outfits put together from borrowed items of friends and family, as well as pieces on loan from independent local businesses such as Friday Vintage, Mojo Lingerie and Just Harry Designs.

We were extremely impressed with the craftsmanship of the designers, the confidence of the models as well as the committee’s organisation of the show. In spite of technical difficulties on the day, we could instantly see which era the looks were inspired by.

We also eyed up the raffle prizes during the interval but unfortunately were not able to get our mitts on any as the tickets were sold out. This was bittersweet, as we did fancy the Urban Outfitters gift card, but were equally delighted to see so much had been raised for their charity of choice, Smart Works, who work to provide unemployed women with clothing and coaching ahead of job interviews. 

Sadly we were not able to stick around for the afterparty as we were leaving Newcastle that evening, however, everyone was so friendly we would have definitely had a blast. The society prides itself on being for everyone no matter their ability, so if you have even a small interest in fashion you are encouraged to get involved. Details are available via their Instagram.
