Nigel Mayglothling sentenced yesterday after pleading guilty to nine counts of indecent assault

The former Assistant Director of Sport at UoN was yesterday sentenced to two years in jail for the sexual abuse of a 14-year-old girl.

Nigel Mayglothling, who left his role at Notts in February, had pleaded guilty to nine counts of indecent assault was told by the prosecution that he had “in effect groomed” the teenager.

The 54-year-old sexually abused the teenage girl from March 14, 1987 to March 13, 1989, when he was working as a PE teacher at Carmel College in Wallingford, Oxfordshire. He will be on the sex offenders’ register for ten years.

“The defendant had in effect groomed her from the age of 13.”

Walsh also read out a statement from the victim, which said: “I don’t feel I was able to develop emotionally because of the abuse. I feel I can’t have normal relationships.

“I was always made to feel I was to blame for what happened.”

Adrian Langdale, defending, said that the relationship between Mayglothling and the teenager was “entirely consensual, if entirely inappropriate.”

Mayglothling was a former international rowing coach and his role at the University included the recruitment of athletes and the organisation of the tri-campus games.
