Confirmed: Notts Uni retain title and are crowned Varsity 2019 winners
The final result 11-3 lead
It's safe to say that this year's Varsity brought an intense battle between Trent and Uni Of, with both sides battling it out to claim the notorious title for their university.
However, it has finally been confirmed that the University of Nottingham have come out victorious and have retained their Varsity title with a lead of 11-3 against Trent.
With only 8 days to fight for the 13 available Varsity points, the tension built extremely quickly.
Varsity kick-started on Wednesday 20th March with Super Wednesday at Trent's Clifton Campus. Eleven of Uni of Nott's teams won, which secured the first point and laid the first stepping stone to Varsity victory.
Following a sensational BUCS win, Uni Of went on to take part in Rugby League against Trent on Thursday 28th March. NTU took a close victory with a nail-biting score of 22-24.
Following Trent's win, the Varsity Basketball fixture saw crowds of uni students flood to Motorpoint Arena to cheer on their teams. This tense match resulted in a draw between UoN and NTU and brought the overall Varsity score to 2-2.
However, UoN were victorious once again in 9 of the 11 games on Super Sunday hosted at the David Ross Sport Village.
This was followed by an exceptional performance from the Women’s Rugby Union side, who beat their rivals by 96-5. It was a closer fixture for the male team who, despite playing exceptionally well, just came up short with a 25-20 loss to NTU.
This year's heavily anticipated Ice Hockey fixture was also very tense and ended in a score of 9-6 – the highest scoring match between both sides in the series’ history. Worth particular mention is Domenico Gullo's spectacular sporting achievement of netting 5 out of UoN's total 9 goals.
On the Lacrosse scene, there was even more success for Uni Of. The ladies' team brought home a win of 18-5 against Trent and the men left the crowd on tenterhooks by winning their match in sudden death. On the same day, UoN scored one pivotal goal in the Men's Football match and claimed the third victory of this truly spectacular day of sport.
On Thursday evening, supporters gathered to watch the Varsity Futsal fixtures, which was one of the largest ever played in England. Amazingly, UoN's female Futsal team had already claimed a 7-4 victory, even before the men had stepped foot on court! The Futsal ended with a 6-4 victory to Uni of Nottingham, which brought much joy to their supporters.
That same evening, UoN sealed yet another point in the American Football – which ended with a wipe-out score of 7-0.
Even though UoN have sealed Varsity victory for 2019, all eyes will still be on the Women's Cricket fixtures on 17th May. We hope that Uni Of can secure those final two varsity points, to end the year on a superb sporting high.
We are so proud of all the #GreenandGold teams for their determination, dedication and sportsmanship. Hopefully we can retain this victory in Varsity 2020!
