All the ways that University of Nottingham are celebrating Black History Month

Each year throughout October the university recognises Black History Month. Black History Month is a national celebration which honours the contributions of those with African and Caribbean heritage to British society. It’s a dedicated time to foster an understanding of Black history and explore the diverse tapestry of the Black British community.

This year, UoN have a variety of events and celebrations. Here’s a rundown of some of the events you can get involved with – ranging from exhibitions, panel discussions, talks, and workshops. A comprehensive timetable can be found here.

Born to exist: The woman I know

“The final part of Toonga’s nationally acclaimed Hip Hop Dance trilogy, Born to Exist invites change to overcome societal stigmas held towards ethnic minorities.”

Students’ Union event: Am I Enough?

“A wellbeing Seminar with TedX Speaker Toluwa Oyeleye. This highly interative seminar will cover self-worth, self-love and self-confidence, allowing you to reflect on how each theme applies to your current reality and providing you with pratical tools to support you in making long-term transformative changes”. Where? A Dark Mind: Film Screening

“The documentary is focused on mental health within the Black community and highlights the experiences and stories of six Black British people. It also features Black psychiatrists, therapists and NHS workers”. Where? Hallward Library Screening Room.

Taking Up Space: Growth, Identity and the importance of Representation in Illustration

“Join Nottingham-based freelance illustrator and print artist Kim Thompson who will be sharing examples of her work and experiences. From the highs and lows of starting out eight years ago, visual identity and integrity, self-branding and social media, to her passion for empowerment and representation via visual communication. The session will end with a short creative workshop for all abilities”. Where? Faculty of Arts.

Black and minority ethnic housing struggles past, present, and future

“This project will explore the current housing crisis through an exploration of its often untold racialised history, before turning to of new research into race, housing, and homelessness in Nottingham”. Where? A40, Sir Clive Granger Building.

Students’ Union movie night: Moonlight

“Organised by the Film Making society. Winning best picture in 2017, Moonlight is a semi-autobiographical coming of age drama which follows a young black man, Chiron, as he navigates black masculinity while coming to terms with his sexuality in 1980’s America”.

Radically redefining self and community as a form of liberation: A panel discussion

“Through personal experiences, community stories and the sharing of theory, our panellists will discuss how we can sustain community and self through radical and anti-colonial practices of community building, adding to the ongoing discussion that surrounds Audre Lorde’s idea of self-preservation being an act of political welfare”. Where? Studio, Portland Building.

Apocalypse not now
