Nottingham Students’ Union believes in ‘freedom of choice’ and is showing the World Cup

The SU will be showing all World Cup games in Mooch

University of Nottingham Students’ Union believes in “freedom of choice” and is showing the 2022 World Cup at the SU campus bar Mooch.

A statement, found inside Mooch, has highlighted the concern over showing the game.

The 2022 World Cup in Qatar kicked off on Sunday November 20th at the Al Bayt Stadium. The game has been surrounded in controversy right from the start, and there have been calls to boycott it based on the countries stance on homosexuality and workers’ rights and deaths.

The Guardian revealed that since Qatar won the bid to host the World Cup in 2010, at least 6,500 migrant labourers have died there.

The SU “believe in freedom of choice” which is why they are showing the game, but “cannot ignore the terrible working conditions and loss of life associated with this World Cup”.

The statement went on to say that the SU “echo the concerns of several other countries and human rights organisations, and support the #PayUpFIFA campaign, calling on FIFA to compensate the workers and their families.”

Whilst the SU ask that their customers “join the cause to support the #PayUpFIFA campaign” they haven’t outlined the ways in which this can be achieved or the practice in which customers can join the cause for the SU’s values of equality and fairness.
