The New Trip in Town
An alternative to Varsity opens booking to all Oxford colleges.
A new ski trip has been planned for March 2013 as an alternative to the Varsity Trip.
In the wake of the Varsity Trip’s failure to sell out, “The New Snow Trip” is being marketed as a smaller, more intimate and sociable option.
Starting life as the New College ski trip, St. Hilda’s joined in 2011 and then Magdalen last year. This is the first year that the trip will be open to the whole university.
Organisers of “The New Snow Trip” have denied any rivalry with the Varsity Trip, but were keen to highlight the superior location of Val D’Isere, renowned for its night life. Skiing conditions in March are also expected to top those in early December, when there is often a scarcity of snow and poor weather.
Chiara Quadranti, the trip’s president, told The Tab: “People go on Varsity because they love the idea of a bit of skiing and huge club nights. Over 3000 students go but ironically it’s not really about meeting people; you go with your group of friends and stay with them.
“We want to offer an alternative. Think less huge sweaty electro nightclub, more day-time clubbing at La Folie Douce. We are still planning the Ents schedule, but so far we have a toboggan and BBQ night, a fondue night and a race day among other events.
“It should be a great mix of the wild, hedonistic partying you want from a ski trip and more intimate events such as the fondue (essentially an Oxford crewdate in the Alps – less curry, more cheese) made possible by the smaller scale of the trip.
“Oh yeah and, obviously, there’ll be strictly no Cambridge! We hate the Tabs in every other situation, why go skiing with them?”
