Greens beat Lib Dems in Oxford East

And Labour hold onto the seat

In a stunning move, the Greens have done better than the Liberal Democrats in the Oxford East constituency: with 11.6% of the vote.

The result reflects results across the country, where the Lib Dems have been universally decimated – they are currently expected to end up with just 10 seats.

The Green party candidate Ann Duncan received 5,890 votes – 437 more than Liberal Democrat Alasdair Murray.

Labour incumbent Andrew Smith came in comfortably first, with 25,356 votes, with Tories a clear second at 10,076. That’s a 7.5% increase in vote share for Labour – and a 22.8% decrease for the Lib Dems.

And in a move that will shock many students, UKIP candidate Ian Macdonald received 3,451 votes. That’s 6.8% of the vote – a 4.5% increase over 2010.

Turnout was low, with just 64.2% of voters registering their opinion: but with a comfortable Labour majority of 15,280, the reason for this is no big surprise.

Hilariously, Monster Raving Loony Party candidate Mad Hatter got 145 votes. Socialist Party candidate Kevin Parkin got just 50 votes however – the lowest in the constituency.
