What will you miss most about Sheffield?
Bet it’s not the hills
It’s the final slog of uni, and whilst the Steel City may not feel so fabulous under the stacks of work and deadlines – you know full well you’ll miss it once you’re lumbered back at home.
With the legendary taste of a Notty House pie slathered in gravy, the non-stop retro pop on a Saturday, and the A list celeb that is Dan Bean on our doorsteps, we all have our favourite local gems that will be particularly heart wrenching to leave behind.
But what will you miss the most when you say goodbye to Sheffield?
Whether you’re graduating for good this year or you’re popping home for summer, now is the time to get sentimental and vote for that one thing that you just can’t live without.
The Peaks
After leaving Sheffield behind, very few of us will be able to jump on a bus and end up somewhere like the Peaks within twenty minutes. The luscious countryside that is just around the corner from you is something that you might take for granted when you’re living the student life, but when you’re back in your drab home town or sitting in your unimpressive local park, you’re bound to wish you were back on Stanage hill soaking up the views.
Corp
It’s undebatable. Corp has a special place in the hearts of many a Sheffield resident – and whilst you may not admit it on a Thursday morning, there is even something about the hangovers that you’ll kind of miss. Your school uniform brings out an inner Britney in you that you’ll never be able to recreate in the club at home, and whilst you’re pretending to like the music elsewhere, deep down you’re wishing you were back in the main room living it up to a bit of Mr Brightside.
You might be drunk at home, but you’re not CORP drunk… and no matter how much fun you’re having, you can’t help but think to yourself: “Wouldn’t it be great if I had a quad vod right now?”
Johns Van
On the outside John’s might look like a normal food van, but to all his regulars it is so much more. There is just something magical about a bacon butty after your 9am lecture that stays with you… It leaves a mark on your soul, and buying your brunch from anywhere else would feel almost like a betrayal.
The SU
When mates from home ask what you miss about uni, you might get a funny look when you reply “the SU”- but here in Sheffield, the SU is far from just a building. With places like Grill and Go to New Leaf on offer, even leaving the food behind is enough to shed a tear about.
But the SU nights out are what you’ll really miss when you’re gone. From Roar to Pop Tarts to Tuesday Club, whether you’re in the mood for a bit of S Club or a little bit of grime, there is something going on for everyone. Miles better than the mediocre remixes of chart music that you hear in the clubs at home, the SU offers multiple nights to suit all of our vibes.
Most importantly, they serve pizza and pasties until the early hours of the morning. There’s a reason we have the best social life in the UK, you know.
Broomhill Friery
Broomhill Friery needs no introduction. One of the best loved establishments in Sheffield, the only thing more loved than the Friery is its owner. Home of Sean Bean’s nephew, the all round yoga loving legend that is Dan Bean, this place has a legacy that will stay with us all for the rest of our lives.
Yes, you can go to a kebab shop at home, but you’ll struggle to find anywhere else that fits the bill when you’re craving a Boromir Burger, or some Ned Stark Nuggets.
The Locals
You just won’t find a friendlier bunch of people than the locals of Sheffield, and going from a city where even the bin man calls you ‘duck’ back to your hometown might be a bit of a reality check.
After you’ve been home a while, you can barely even get your mum to show you the same affection as the shopkeeper did in Broomhill, and you’ll be lucky to get a “hello” from the person next to you on the bus. You’ll think back fondly to the over chatty taxi driver you had a few months back in Sheffield, and ponder: ‘If only I appreciated the locals whilst I still had the time’.
Notty House Pies
Before you came to Sheffield you may have thought your life was already complete, but you haven’t lived until you’ve feasted on a pie from Notty House. Rich and creamy and dripping in gravy, this is not just an ordinary pie… it is a culinary masterpiece. Synonymous with everything warm and hearty about Sheffield, the pies from here cannot be bought in your local supermarket and they can’t be replicated at home. They’re like nothing else, and they’re sure to leave a gap in your heart when you leave them behind.
Hendersons Relish
Far more than just an everyday condiment, Hendersons Relish is the sauce of Sheffield. You can buy it at home, but it just won’t taste the same. Whether you tip it on your chips or you add it to your cheese on toast, nothing could be more of an icon of Yorkshire, and you’re sure to miss it when you’re no longer around.
Balti King
Gone are the days when you can sit around a table at two in the morning with a napkin on your lap, deciding what curry you’re going to order in your £10 deal. You just won’t find anywhere else like Balti King when you leave Broomhill behind. Here in Sheffield we know that a post night out curry is a thing of beauty, but, heartbreakingly, the rest of the world is yet to catch on.
