Man responsible for student accommodation burglary jailed

He broke into flats on Edward Street

A man who broke into city centre student accommodation has been jailed three years.

Glenn Thackray broke into a block of student flats on Edward Street, which is home to Aspect 3, Derwent Students, and Cornerhouse student accommodation.

Thackray claimed that he entered the building on Friday 21st October to wait for a friend, but later admitted to searching around for opportunities to steal items.

He has now been jailed for 36 months after pleading guilty to the charges at Sheffield Crown Court.

Detective Mark Cockayne of South Yorkshire Police, said: “Any kind of burglary is an extremely intrusive crime.

“Luckily, nothing was taken during this incident and I’m pleased that the people living in the building did not have to endure having personal items taken from them.

“We have lots of safety advice on our website, on how to ensure your home is as safe as possible and to protect your possessions.”

As we approach the main festive period, South Yorkshire Police have recently launched the #DontMakeItEasy campaign to help prevent the public being victims of burglary or theft.

The website offers a burglary tool kit booklet, general home security guidance and personal safety tips.

Figures from the Complete University Guide in September found that one in 50 students from the University of Sheffield will be a victim of burglary, robbery or a violent or sexual crime.
