Your ultimate guide to Kelham Island

Last week, Kelham Island was named the eighth hippest hangout in the UK by Travel Supermarket.

From the cosy, local pub The Fat Cat, to the historical Kelham Island Museum, to the Indie Arcade where you can pick out all the weird and wonderful antiques your hipster heart desires, here’s out checklist for what to do at Kelham Island.

The Fat Cat

The Fat Cat has all the charm of a traditional pub. Its menu features classic pub food, but with a hipster twist, as it has won awards for its selection of vegetarian meals. It is the perfect place to relax with a pint beer from Kelham Island Brewery.

Craft and Dough

Craft beer and pizza (gluten-free and vegan options available), the menu at this restaurant makes it clear why its considered one of the hippest eateries in Sheffield. You can also get brunch there at the weekend.

Peddler Night Market

Kelham Island comes alive during the first weekend of every month for Peddler Night Market. Filled with street food, craft ale and independent artists, spend an evening here, browsing the stalls and trying new cuisines.

Kelham Island Brewery

Opened in 1990 by a former economics lecturer at Hallam, Kelham Island brewery became the first independent Sheffield brewery for more than a century. They have five core beers, as well as monthly specials. Safe to say: this is the place to go if you want to branch out from just drinking Stella.

Kelham Island Museum

If you want to learn about Sheffield’s industrial past, look no further than Kelham Island Museum. The Sheffield Industrial Museums Trust aims “to tell the story of Sheffield from its beginning to the present day.” The museum is one of the Steel City’s most highly recommended tourist destinations.

The Depot Bakery/Eatery

The Depot Bakery is open late during Peddler Night Market, where it offers a range of doughnuts and hot drinks. You may recognise the food on offer, as they provide baked goods for both Steam Yard and Tamper Coffee.

The Chimney House

This family business, situated on the riverbank, is housed in a beautifully restored red brick building. The venue can be hired out for weddings and parties. They host Yoga & Brunch every month- expect lots of avocados. It’s pretty pricey, but ideal for celebrating a special occasion in a hipster fashion.

Indie Arcade 

Filled with everything from china antiques to vintage cameras, it would be easy to spend a whole day browsing the eclectic stock at Indie Arcade. It might take a bit of hunting, but look out for the one-of-a-kind sartorial gems, ’60s records and classic books.
