Everything to do during Fresher’s Week at Sheffield

Fresher's Week is hectic; it can be a struggle to fit in the max amount of exploring and fun into one week without getting overwhelmed in a new city. Obviously when you’re there you’ll be bombarded with info and events. Here’s a list of things to get you started in our great city, we’ll ease you in gently.

Go on an SU night out

We’re lucky to have a 10/10 students union, voted number one in the country for nine years running. The SU has our very own club with some of the best club nights in the city. Head to Tuesday Club if dance music is your thing, Pop Tarts is the one for nostalgic bangers, Roar is a fave for sports teams; otherwise Bar One is open every night if you want something a little more low key. An SU night out is a good one to ease you into the swing of things; there’s loads of fresher's events and you can get Broomhill Friary chips on the walk home.

Go on a night out in the city

Then you can graduate to a city night out. Corp, Plug, Code, Tank, or the iconic Leadmill; there's tonnes of options to suit the whole squad. The city is only a £6 taxi ride from Endcliffe, so heading down with a group is cheap and stressfree.

Explore the vintage shops

During the day, stroll into the city and browse some of our independent and vintage shops. Dev Quarter is a haven for one offs. Vulgar and Mooch are student faves for clothes, so go pick yourself out some new garms. Otherwise, Moonko is super cute for room decorations to make your flat a home. Then wander further to Thrifty Store and learn your way round the city and back.

Go to Steamyard for a doughnut

Take a break from shopping and grab some refreshments. Steamyard on Division Street is well-loved, offering amazing coffee, sandwiches and their famous donuts. Get their £3 coffee and a doughnut deal, or treat yourself to a kronut which are definitely the entirety of your daily sugar and more, but are so so worth it. The intimate atmosphere is the perfect place to get to know new friends, and have some down time.

Do some flat bonding

Basically the whole point is to get know your flatmates and make some friends, so make some time for just hanging out. Head to the pub, The Francis Newton is a great option, and if Wetherspoons can’t bring people together, I don’t know what can. Otherwise, Dominos always have the best deals during fresher's so have a flat movie and pizza night to rejuvenate. Trust me, you’ll need some time to recover.

Go to the fresher's fairs

A very important one. The fresher's fair is super important to get involved with the uni community, and also pick up loads of free stuff. Going to the fairs is the easiest way to learn about and join societies, and know what’s going on around campus and how to get involved. It’s also at these fairs, and during Fresher's Week, that you can come find us and join our Sheffield Tab family, which we know is the best part.

Support local businesses

No Costa or Starbucks allowed. Sheffield has a huge, thriving independent business community. Anything you want, you can get locally. For Cocktails, ditch Revs and go to The Great Gatsby; for food, swap Nandos for one of the many many locally owned restaurants on Ecclesall Road; for coffee, there’s a different independent coffee house on practically every street. Even local takeaway pizza, there’s practically no need for chains. Fully adopt your uni home, and start supporting our scene.

Bar crawl down West Street

For when you want to go out, but you can’t be bothered to go out out, a bar crawl down West Street is just as entertaining. Start off lightly at the Cavendish, then to Tiger Works for a £5 round, before dancing on benches in Bierkeller and diving into the West Street Live drinks menu. Usually a messy one, always a good one.
