Labour have reinstated Sheffield MP Jared O’Mara

He was suspended for allegedly making misogynistic and homophobic comments

Jared O'Mara, MP for Sheffield Hallam, has been reinstated by the Labour Party following a sitting of their national executive committee (NEC).

The NEC ruled that O'Mara should receive a formal warning rather than expulsion from the Party.

The Sheffield MP was suspended in late 2017 after abusive comments made on social media came to light and many people both inside and outside of the Labour Party called for his removal from power.

A Labour Party spokesperson today confirmed that "the disputes panel has ruled on the balance of the evidence that a formal warning should be issued and a mandatory requirement to attend training."

The NEC is the only body within the Labour Party which has the authority to expel members from the Party, but cannot unseat sitting MPs.

Had O'Mara been expelled from the Party, he would therefore not have been bound to give up his seat but instead could have continued his term as MP for Sheffield Hallam as an independent candidate.

According to political blog Guido Fawkes, a woman who claims "O'Mara called her 'ugly bitch'" has vowed to pursue him at public events until he offers a personal apology.

O'Mara has apologised for remarks made between 2002 and 2004, and previously said he "categorically denies" later allegations.
