The must see gigs in Sheffield this September

Apparently, some band called Arctic Monkeys are playing Sheffield a few times this September, who knew?

However, there are some fantastic bands who are gracing the Steel City with their presence and talent who really shouldn't be missed. So, whether you're a fresher with a free night in between your clubbing schedule or a seasoned Sheffield gig veteran, make the most of this month's gigs and see some of the best underground talent this city has to offer.

The Seamonsters – Café Totem, 15th September

With no management or promotion label, the Seamonsters have really come a long way in the past couple of years. Described as "undeniably charming indie music", The all-girl sextet are off on their first tour with This Feeling and are making an appearance in their hometown in the Furnival Gate venue after a very impressive festival season. Taking inspiration from bands such as Pulp and the Wombats, as well as 80s Synth Pop, the 'Indie Glitter' group are certainly on the way up following their success with Pirate Studios. Their energetic live shows have pulled in a strong band of followers and this gig is very close to selling out, so make sure you don't miss out. Support comes from Hush and Feral Family. Babe Punch – Maida Vale, 20th September

Opening a new weekly event at the West Street venue 'Indigo', Babe Punch are certainly a band that can kick proceedings off with a bang. Standing under the banner of "frenzied pop punk" the Nottingham/Derby based four piece explore the grunge and punk template through their own influences. Supporting The Cribs and Vant in their history, the alt rock outfit have a reputation as a fantastic live act. Their very short debut single 'Control' channels original punk bands such as X-Ray Spex and has tallied up well over ten thousand streams which is a great achievement for a band at this stage in their career. It's free entry so just turn up on the door from 9pm, you won't be disappointed.

Mi Mye – Picture House Social, 27th September

As freshers draws to a close, this gig might be the great way to wind down for the night after many heavy nights. Mi Mye hail from Leeds and Wakefield and are currently five albums deep into their career and come to Sheffield on the back on their 'Your Left Side' and 'OK So' EPs. Often being compared to acts such as the National and Sparklehorse, they bring their atmospheric , eclectic sound to the Picture House Social. Taking inspiration from their lyricist/fiddle player learning his trade in the Scottish Highlands, there are certainly folk elements that contribute to their music, which would suit the Ballroom in the venue perfectly. False Heads – Record Junkee, 26th September

If you're getting compliments on your music from Iggy Pop, you must be doing something right. Essex three piece False Heads are coming to Sheffield on their UK and European tour with five releases already up online and have taken the music world by storm since their formation in 2016. Their punk tunes have impressed a lot of people in the business from Iggy Pop, to ex-Ramones manager Danny Fields, to the Libertines – who they supported on their sold out tour. Described by Clash Magazine as "English melodies…matched against a raw sense of destruction", this isn't going to be a quiet evening out. Get your tickets via this link.

American two piece, Striking Matches, come to Leadmill this September

Striking Matches – The Leadmill, 7th September

Whether you're into groovy riffs, slow acoustic ballads or tunes with some sweet harmonies, Striking Matches have got you covered. Originating from Nashville, the home of country, they have used their surroundings to make create some incredible tunes that can please all tastes. They won the Best International Act of the Year at the British Country Awards in 2015 and reached number six in the US Heatseekers Chart with their debut album 'Nothing But The Silence'. The two piece have recently released a brand new tune called Retrograde, which has almost reached one million streams on Spotify and are not to be missed. Get your tickets here.
