In pictures: Uni of Sheffield campus becomes ghost town as all classes cancelled
Has everyone just gone home?
The Uni of Sheffield’s campus emptied today as all classes were cancelled amid the escalating coronavirus crisis.

Seminar rooms and lecture halls across the uni fell silent as the uni halted face-to-face teaching.
The Uni of Sheff and Hallam have both moved all teaching online, although libraries and support services remained open on Monday.
Liverpool, Birmingham, Bristol, Nottingham and Oxford among the other unis axing classes and taking drastic measures to stem the pandemic.
With Uni off and club nights cancelled, a lot of students are heading home to see out the shut-down – it looks like the streets of Sheff will remain eerily quiet for some time. Some students have returned home.
Covid-19 confirmed cases shot up to 1,542 today and the death toll hit 40, as PM Boris Johnson urged the public to “avoid social contact with others… avoid pubs, clubs and other social venues.”
Ten floors of the Arts Tower remain locked down after a member of staff in the School of Architecture tested positive for the virus.
