Coronavirus cases decline at the University of Sheffield with weekly total down to 191
Finally, some good news
There were nine new coronavirus cases amongst students at the University of Sheffield yesterday (Sunday 18 October), according to the university’s tracker.
It marks a massive decrease from the start of October when there were 109 confirmed cases amongst students on Monday 5th alone, and 91 and 98 on Thursday 1st and Friday 2nd respectively.
The total cases amongst students for the week beginning Monday 12th October was 189, compared to 430 for the week beginning Monday 5th October and 474 for the week beginning Monday 28th September.
The trend shows a reduction of weekly cases and the number of positive tests amongst staff and students is at the lowest since the university began to release statistics three weeks ago.
However, the total number of cases at both Sheffield unis has passed 1,700 and prompted calls from the UCU to end all face-to-face teaching.
Sheffield Hallam is still teaching face-to-face but has massively reduced contact hours in an effort to stop the virus from spreading.
The University of Sheffield resumes face-to-face teaching today (Monday 19) after a suspension to put mitigation measures in place.
It comes after Sheffield health boss warned the city could be plunged into a tier-three lockdown and first-year hotspots Endcliffe and Ranmoor were named amongst the areas with the highest number of coronavirus cases.
