Body found off the Dorset Coast confirmed to be Soton student Liam Day
The 26-year-old was first reported missing on 15 June
The body recovered yesterday afternoon off the Dorset coast has today been identified as Southampton Student Liam Day.
The 26-year-old was first reported missing by his girlfriend, Emily Brown, after he failed to return home from a solo climbing student in Swanage.
His body was first seen by a passing boat just off St. Alban’s Head. It was recovered at around 12pm yesterday afternoon by a Swanage lifeboat.
A multi-agency search was conducted, with members of Southampton University’s mountaineering and bouldering societies, of which Liam was a member, joining in to help look for him.
The medical student’s car and climbing gear were found the day after he went missing. His car was found parked on Durlston road, and his climbing gear was found one mile west of Anvil Point, although no trace of Liam himself was found. Police believe it was possible he was climbing unsupported.
“It is possible that he may have gone deep water climbing which typically involves using a rope to lower down the cliff and then climbing back up unsupported.” – Dorset Police.
Liam’s girlfriend, Emily, said the light in her life had “switched off” and her two children adored her partner. The discovery of Liam’s body came on the pair’s two year anniversary.
A post-mortem is due to be conducted tomorrow, with an inquest expected to be opened at Bournemouth Coroner’s Court by the end of the week.
The 26-year-old’s family have been informed.
