Prince Andrew resigns as University of Huddersfield’s chancellor after Jeffrey Epstein scandal

Caitlin MacdonaldThe University of Huddersfield has confirmed Prince Andrew will be standing down as chancellor of the university immediately.
His resignation comes days after students campaigned for his resignation due to his friendship with Jeffrey Epstein, the convicted paedophile.
In a statement the university said: "Due to the circumstances and in discussion with the University, (Prince Andrew) has decided to step down immediately to allow the University to appoint a successor."
The Duke informed the university that he "continues to unequivocally condemn Jeffrey Epstein's activities and regrets his ill-judged association with him", before adding he "deeply sympathises with everyone who has been affected and those wanting some form of closure" following Epstein's suicide earlier this year.
The University of Huddersfield additionally expressed their "deep sympathy to all of those victims and families that had been affected".
The university will begin the process of appointing a new chancellor on November 27th at the University Council meeting, with the aim of confirming the new chancellor at the next meeting in March 2020.
Huddersfield Students' Union welcomed the decision of Prince Andrew's resignation. In a statement, they said they "look forward to welcoming a new chancellor who puts students' values at the heart of everything they do."
Huddersfield students earlier this week supported the Students' Union motion campaigning for Prince Andrew's resignation on Twitter using the hashtag #NotMyChancellor.
Today students used the hashtag to celebrate the news of Prince Andrew's resignation.
Student Leon Ross wrote how he was "very proud of all the students who worked so hard and put pressure on the University"
Current student Becky McCarthy tweeted saying she was pleased with the Prince's resignation, as he "does not represent what we stand for as a University!"
