Six of the Best: Matching Underwear Sets

The other day I found out something quite disturbing. Every single one of my friends owns at least one set of matching underwear. Now I have yet to venture into the underwear aisle and buy such a set but this revelation got me thinking. Is it really that essential to own a matching set of underwear? See, I always thought they were either for middle-aged women and/or black lace things with holes in various places. That’s the problem with matching underwear: it’s got so many connotations that as soon as you wear it you become very aware that you’re wearing it. You feel conspicuous, like everyone knows that today of all days you choose to match your pants to your bra. You are so aware of the underwear in fact that you feel hideously uncomfortable and are thoroughly put off it, vowing never to wear it again. Clashing underwear never gives you such difficulties.
Is matching underwear more trouble than it’s worth then? Is it just another unnecessary stress? Old fashioned even? The shops aren’t convinced. Go into almost any high street store and you can buy pretty pink pants to match that pretty pink bra. Even celebrities are getting in on the action underwear ranges being brought out left right and centre. It’s unavoidable! And maybe it’s not a bad thing. See, wearing matching underwear isn’t really so different to wearing a new dress or expensive lipstick; it’s just something you do to make an effort. This time the effort just so happens to be directed bra-wards, but that’s ok. Fact is, wearing a set makes you feel like you’ve tried to look nice that day and you can’t help but feel that bit more together, more confident. So maybe we should put aside our prejudices and give it shot. Everything once, right?
