Theatre Guide Dog: Week 1
Theatre Editor KIERAN CORCORAN has some big paws to fill. Judge him as he rounds up this week’s pack of plays.
UPDATE: Downing don’t seem so keen on charity anymore – their RAG smoker tonight (29th Jan) is CANCELLED. Perhaps wise since all of Cambridge’s most RAG-prone are fleeing Cambridge as fast as possible.

Closer 25th-29th
A play about relationships. Presumably not very good relationships, since it contains the line “fuck off and die you fucked-up slag”. If you’re looking for a ‘dirty’ play this week it’s a choice between this and Pornography. You could see both I suppose. May usurp Trent Reznor’s claim to most obscene thing named Closer.
Corpus at 7, £5-6
Pornography 26th-29th
The Telegraph‘s potential ‘most shocking play‘ of the Edinburgh Fringe ’08 takes an uncomfortably close look at someone uncomfortably similar to a 7/7 bomber. Some church-goers who haven’t heard of metaphors made it their mission to take down the posters for this show so you wouldn’t know about it. It is my mission to make sure you do – I win. The ADC want you to go, God doesn’t. Check our review on Thursday to see who’s right.
N.B. Contains no actual nudity.
ADC at 11, £4-6
Loot 25th-29th (except 26th)
Joe Orton. Again. The pleasingly acronymous CADS give Christ’s’ newly-refurbished theatre space a run for it’s money with a play where bank robbers run with somebody else’s money. It’s a black comedy – hope for jokes better than that one.
Yusuf Hameid Theatre – Christ’s at 7.30, £4-6
Inspired 25th-29nd
I hope this is as inventive as the title suggests, because otherwise someone will end their review with a joke about Inspired being uninspired. And nobody wants that. Boasting a wide variety of styles and a script beyond criticism, if all else fails you can ogle.
ADC at 7.45, £6-10
Wolfson Howler 24th
Our esteemed editor liked the last one, and the Howler is usually top-notch stuff. Headliner Rob Rouse was at the Varsity Trip Comedy Night and made some funnies about Geography and “spunk grenades” – not the classiest, but still chokes out a chuckle.
Wolfson Bar at 8, £5
The Study of Young Men 25th-29th
Another four-hander at Corpus. Or should that be eight-hander? Anyway, there are four actors and they’re great chums at the start but by the end one of them is dead. It has at least one joke about scrabble – whether that recommends it or not is for you to decide.
Corpus at 9.30, £5-6
Downing RAG Smoker 29th CANCELLED
The first chance of term to get at the Howard’s shiny red leather seats. Proceeds go to charity rather than am-dram bureaucracy. So it’s like comic relief, except that this might be funny.
Howard Theatre – Downing at 9, £5
Fo’Show 25th
CamFM’s comedy panel show is recording at John’s, featuring might-be fresher Mark Liu and Senior Theatre Critic Phoebe Luckhurst – could this be their long-awaited date?
School of Pythagoras – St John’s at 7, Free
Inspired 25th-29nd
I hope this is inventive as the title suggests, because otherwise someone will end their review with a joke about Inspired being uninspired. And nobody wants that. Boasting a wide variety of styles and a script beyond criticism, if all else fails you can ogle.
ADC at 7.45 £6-10
