Headliner Revealed: We’d rather be at St John’s May Ball

The embargo on St John’s headliner ended today and we are very excited to announce that their headliner will be the one and only Katy B with MNEK supporting.

This news is sure to cause a stir since it is rare for a may ball committee, even one as well-endowed as John’s, to be able to afford an act as huge as Katy B. She will front an already very impressive line up featuring DJs Oneman and Floating Points and comedian Nina Conti as released on our May Ball Blog.

One jovial Johnian commented, “I’m really excited. She might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but I for one cannot wait to yell out the 40% of ‘Crying for No Reason’ I know at 2am. Plus I heard Trinity wanted her but it flopped – so I will enjoy her a lot more.”

With a recent UK #1 album release, Katy B graces the St. John’s stage as one of the most celebrated British singers in the last decade. With massive hits like “Katy on a Mission”, NME Dancefloor Anthem of 2012: “Broken Record” and recent chart-topper “Crying For No Reason”, she will be appearing ahead of big performances at festivals across the world and a UK-wide tour promoting her new album “Little Red” in October.

Not everyone is happy about this news, however. Sai Eccles, an engineering fresher at St John’s, told The Tab, “When you pay £160 for a ticket, you don’t expect to see someone who you wouldn’t go to see if you were paid £160. I’m not angry just disappointed.”

It is worth noting that the support act is also a hotshot. Off the back of an extremely successful 2012, singer songwriter MNEK comes to St. John’s to perform big hits off his highly anticipated debut album release ahead of festival performances at Glastonbury and Bestival. Following work with Rudimental, Duke Dumont and A*M*E (with three Top 10 hits, including two Number One singles, and a Grammy nomination at just the age of 19), his recent collaboration with Gorgon City: “Ready For Your Love”, was a massive Top 5 hit seeing him nominated for BBC Sound of 2014.

In the past St John’s have played host to a number of huge names including King Charles, Bombay Bicycle Club, Clean Bandit and Magnetic Man. Today’s headline announcement arguably trounces all of these.
