Cambridge students pull rolls of film out of their anus and vagina

Performance art often gets a bad reputation.

It’s 7pm on a Saturday evening, and the English faculty’s Judith E. Wilson drama studio is filled to capacity with an intrigued, arty crowd.

After queueing outside, we’re lead into the darkened room where the two performers, Maria Sgarcitu and Sam Fairbrother, awaited us.

The first segment was fun – an homage to famous films, it consisted of clips of important works of cinema interspersed with the pair’s rehearsals of reinterpretations. So far so normal.

Then came the strange part. The artists produced two rolls of film from their orifices. His anus and her vagina.

As they did this, the MGM lion roared repeatedly.

The audience sat patiently, some mesmerised, others squirming.

They then proceeded to tape themselves together with the rolls of film, before attempting to repeat their movements from the first section, leading to a bizarre dance.

Eventually, they untied themselves and walked out of the room, leaving us slack jawed but strangely satisfied.

The message of the piece was mostly clear: art, especially film, is inspired by that which came before it. But by combining it with something you produce from yourself (literally), you can create something else, something new.

That said, seriously, what the fuck.
