Town vs. Gown: Rugby Match Report

University prevail 59-12 in annual fixture against local rugby club.

Cambridge University ran out winners against Cambridge City in the annual Town versus Gown match at Grange Road. It was an impressive performance from the Light Blues as they scored eight tries against a youthful City side. Michael Mortimore ensured that captain Don Stevens was not missed with an impeccable goalkicking display. He kicked 17 points but was sent to the sin bin late on.

The student side will take many positives from this commanding result. They scored a variety of tries, showing that both their forwards and backs are dangerous. Lare Erogbogbo was first on the scoresheet. He used his power well to break through the defensive line and go over in just the third minute.

The University Team

Jacob Rees was next to score after good work of the line-out. That set piece was strong all evening, as it was against Loughborough a week ago. Prop Jacob Poulton drove over the line to put the University 21-0 up but Cambridge City replied with a try of their own. The sides went in with the students leading 21-5.

It was more of the same in the second half. Mortimore kicked a penalty before Daniel Dass scored to cap an impressive display from the Cats’ undergraduate. After City’s number eight was shown a yellow card Lola Erogbogbo replicated his brother’s feat with another try.

James Kilroe, Fraser Gillies and Angus Lockhart all added tries as the Light Blues made their dominance count. Cambridge City ensured it wasn’t all one way traffic, scoring through a good line break.

The return of Stevens (centre) was a boost to the side

However the last word went to Don Stevens. The Light Blues captain broke his leg in last year’s Varsity match. He made his return from that injury when he replaced Seb Tullie after 49 minutes. He rounded off a bustling and energetic performance with a conversion to bring the final score to 59-12. His return as well as  the commanding team performance will give Cambridge University great belief for the upcoming season.
