The latest on CURUFC

That run included a memorable win against the University of Queensland and three thumpings against the Old Boys, Cambridge City then Shelford.

The Women’s Blues team endured a rough start to the season losing 5-20 to Exeter in their BUCS league.

Here’s a quick recap of the Blues’ most recent games:

Vs. Shelford (A) 41-12, 6^th October

In the second of the annual fixtures against local club sides, Cambridge again came out on top. The pack got things going with an early penalty try from a rolling maul. The backs were in especially fine form with Lukas Kruger (Churchill) scoring two tries from outside centre. Simon Davies (Jesus) and George Bilclough (St. John’s) also got onto the scoresheet.

The forwards had been brilliant for the early part of this season but they needed the introduction of Will Briggs (Magdalene) and Max Montgomery (Emmanuel) to improve their set pieces. Montgomery also chipped in with a try. Ultimately this was a very satisfying win for CURUFC.

Shelford RFC hosted the Cambridge on a picturesque day

Vs. University of Queensland (H) 35-27, 9^th October

Just three days after beating Shelford, the men’s Blues were victorious again however this victory was much harder won. Both the scrum and the boot of Michael Mortimore (St. Edmund’s) deserved a special mention. The game epitomised the contrastingly rugby strengths of Australia and England. The Aussies were creative and full of flair while Cambridge relied on a sturdy defence.

Cambridge’s set piece was fierce too and it brought two tries, one to James Kilroe (Robinson) and one penalty try. Davies scored his second try in two games while Fraser Gillies (Hughes Hall) showed good agility to score too. In the closing stages, Mortimore’s kicking was influential in Cambridge pulling away from Queensland. The wing finished with fifteen points.

Vs. Northampton Saints Wanderers (H) 12-71, 19^th October

The Northampton Saints are one of the Premierships strongest professional teams. They sent there ‘B’ Team over to Grange Road for a hotly anticipated encounter. Unfortunately for the large crowd, the men’s Blues couldn’t muster the strength or resolve to rise to the challenge. The Wanderers were 38-0 up at half time, having scored six tries. Cambridge improved in the second half but the pattern of the game remained the same.

However the set piece was still strong for the students, leading to a penalty try from a rolling maul. The Wanderers responded in fierce fashion with four quick tries. Cambridge did scored one more try through Kilroe but the night belonged to the visitors. The highlights can be found here. There’s some great rugby and a questionable soundtrack.

The Blues are back in action on Saturday. They play Welsh Academicals at 2pm at Grange Road.

The women’s team next BUCS fixture is against the University of Gloucester at Fitzwilliam on the 11^th November.
