Could DAVID POCOCK be headed for Cambridge?

Cantabs’ hopes for redemption in Varsity 2016 are kept alive. 

David Pocock has signed a new contract with the Wallabies which includes a built-in sabbatical. Pocock will take a year off rugby to“further his studies and personal development”. Rumours abound online that he could be headed for England.

Pocock told the Australian media “I am aware that rugby’s not everything in life and there are some things outside the game that interest me. So to be able to do both, I’m sure it seems strange to some people, but it make sense to me. It comes back to enjoyment and knowing why you play the game.”

“This is my 11th season of professional rugby and I really want to continue, but I feel like a little bit of a break will be good for the mind and good for the body and probably good for the soul too,”

Earlier this year, Cambridge’s very own resident international rugby star, Jamie Roberts, tweeted an apparent suggestion to Pocock that he join Roberts as a Cambridge student.

Roberts, currently a MPhil student at Queens, wasn’t able  to prevent Oxford’s sixth straight victory in the 2015 Rugby Varsity Match. Struck down by injury, he was forced off the pitch at halftime and was forced to watch the 12-6 loss from the sidelines.

Roberts, better known as The Tab’s #8 BNOC, has shown himself willing to embrace typical Cambridge life. He was spotted in Cindies last year, to the delight and amazement of students.

Pocock is widely credited with being an integral part of Australia’s Finals run in the 2015 Rugby World Cup that saw them crush England’s hopes of advancing beyond the pool stage. The Wallabies went on to beat Scotland and Argentina before losing to New Zealand in the final, despite Pocock managing to score a try.

Pocock is a longstanding campaigner on environmental issues and against homophobia in sport, and has said he will not marry until same-sex marriage is legalised in Australia.   He is currently studying ecological agriculture at an Australian university alongside his Australian national team duties but reportedly hasn’t made a final decision as how he will spend his sabbatical year.
