Trump protest to take place in Cambridge TODAY following Muslim Ban

The demonstration is part of an international backlash against the President

An anti-Donald Trump demonstration is set to take place on Monday following the announcement of the President’s new Muslim migration restrictions. The demonstration is set to start at 5pm by Senate House.

Organised by Francesca Ebel (a former member of The Tab team) and CUSU Women’s Officer Audrey Sebatindira, the protest takes particular issue with Theresa May’s refusal to criticise the policy, describing the UK as complicit with Trump’s actions. The Facebook event for the demonstration currently has well over 1000 prospective attendees.

The rally is part of a global backlash instigated by US Presidents decision to ban Immigration from seven majority Muslim countries including Iraq, Iran and Syria, including any dual nationals. Many US nationals have been left stranded in airports following the executive order which has drawn fierce criticism from figures including Angela Merkel, Boris Johnson and Iraqi-born MP Nadhim Zahawi, who is himself likely to affected.

Four-time gold medal winner and British Olympic hero Sir Mo Farah described the ban as ‘from a place of ignorance and prejudice’ and expressed concerned he may not be able to return to his family in Portland Oregon.

Anti-Trump demonstrations are not new to Cambridge, with a similar protest taking place last week, just after the inauguration of the new US president, which included the smashing down of a wall made of cardboard boxes.

Organisers Francesca and Audrey told The Tab “Not all students will be able to make it to London this evening, so it’s important that they feel able to make their voice heard regardless. We particularly want to platform the voices of those affected by the ban, those who experience Islamophobia, and those who engage in anti-racist work in their day-to-day lives.”

“We’re conscious, however, that protests like these aren’t accessible to everyone. We encourage anyone who can’t physically make it to engage by contacting their local MP. There will also be a live broadcast of the protest.”
