Man tasered by police on New North Road after yelling ‘ISIS lives on’

The man was detained outside Northfield on New North Road

A man was tasered by police and involved in a “scuffle” with an officer outside Northfields after shouting about ISIS.

Bystanders described traffic standing still on New North Road and at least four police cars stopping at the scene at around 3.45pm on Saturday.

The man, who was in his twenties, was tackled to the ground while shouting out in apparent support for ISIS.

Police struggled to handcuff and control the man as he attempted to resist arrest, at which point the officers tasered him twice in order to subdue him.

Rachel Boylin, an International Relations fresher living in Northfield said: “At one point the man began to run in our direction towards the crowd.

“He hurt a policeman, who was holding his face and looked in pain, crouched on the side of the road”.

The man appeared uncooperative and angry. The police tasered him when he refused to get down onto his belly in order to be handcuffed.

First year Drama student Ashley Gillard said: “It happened outside my accommodation in Northfield.

“He shouted in pain at being tasered but the police had to do it again because he was trying to wriggle free”.

The incident happened outside of Northfield accommodation on New North Road

The incident came just hours after the Je Suis Charlie gathering of solidarity in the Forum that morning.
