Vintage garms are taking over in Exeter, but where’s the best place to buy?

Are you indie, hipster, vintage, retro, basic or just a scruff?

Coming from the vintage Mecca that is Bristol, friends go on about their latest floral shirt or baggy jumper unearthed from this charity shop or that charity shop pretty much every day.

When I came to Exeter I presumed that the scene for finding amazing clothing in charity shops was non-existent. Apparently not.

Here’s what I uncovered after a rainy Saturday spent mooching for gems…

British Heart Foundation

Think knee high boots (oh, so Vogue), classic heels, and 80’s looking loafers your grandma would love. Here, you o in with an open mind and a good dose of imagination. They’ve got Clueless style tartan skirts for the preppy aesthetic and classic oversized jumpers.

Despite containing a few cute blouses, the shop mainly consisted of plain shirts and skirts, not really appealing to the alternative patterns found in a lot of places.

Therefore if you are looking for a preppy style or just a plain top or jumper of any colour, this is your place.

PDSA

They’ve got £1 deal on all clothes, patterned jumpers, great classic tweet for the home counties kids among you and denim skirts 10 times cheaper than Urban Outfitters.

The PDSA works for all of those on a budget or keen to knuckle down and really find something special hidden away. This place is a real treasure trove.

Cancer Research UK

Full of pastels, colours and a smorgasbord of checkered shirts, if you’re into upcycling and patching up your pieces to add a personal twist, the Cancer Research UK shop might just be the perfect place for you.

Raw and someone unfinished, the clothes were varied and perfect for jazzing up yourself if you’re the creative type, obvs.

Kidney Research UK

Florals, florals, florals. They’ve got a classic collection of coats and jackets and with festival season coming up, this might be the place for you.

What this shop lacks in size it makes up for in potential. Although it was kinda small, I envisage it will have a lot more choice come spring so, I will definitely be paying it another visit soon.

All in all Exeter’s Charity Shop scene was not that bad. Yes, it is nothing compared to the likes of the bigger cities but it has potential, and if you really search hard you will find yourself some great garms.
