‘Small number’ of Exeter Students suspended for breaking Covid-19 regulations

Michael RudlingThe Guardian has reported that the University of Exeter has sent some students home for breaching rules intended to slow the spread of coronavirus.
The Uni released a statement confirming it had suspended “a small number” of students for breaking their Covid regulations whilst infections rise.
This comes after the University advised students not to mix with other households for two weeks starting from last Monday.
The Guardian also reported that cases in Exeter have risen from 127 to 223, as Exeter enters the top 10 Covid hotspots in the UK.
Ben Bradshaw, Labour MP for Exeter, sympathised with students but supported the Uni’s stance, saying: “It’s often by taking tough and drastic action early and effectively, that you can ensure more freedoms are enjoyed further down the line.”
The full statement from a University of Exeter Spokesperson read: “We have had a small number of positive Covid-19 cases over the past few days.
“The health and welfare of all students and staff is our overriding priority, and our Rapid Response Hub is co-ordinating testing and working with Public Health England and the national track and trace programme to share details of any positive cases, as well as target those who need to self-isolate or be tested and trace their close contacts.”
